4 Bank Chip?

Hope I'm posting in the right spot. I've done a few Lite mods like flowmasters, h-Pipe minus the cats, cool-air pipe w/larger throttle-b0dy that came with it, and pulley kit. I'm looking for my next mod and am curious about this SCT Mustang 4 bank chip. I love the idea of 4 perf setups but I'm wondering what kind of increase in horses I'ld get with this. Also if this isn't the way you would go what would you suggest for a next step. At present most I've got is 1 to 1 and half grand.

With your mods you will see simimal gain with a tune. With your mods, you might have gained 10-15rwhp. You could get a mail order tune from Modular Depot or Modular Powerhouse. But with the mods you have now, I wouldnt spend the money on a dyno tune.

spend your money on brakes and suspension. the dividends to usable power and control are way more worth it. if you've got a hardon for more hp and nothing will make you happy but that, then take the 1500 bones and get the nicest nitrous kit you can. keep the shots to 100hp or less and you'll have a nice happy life.

By the mail order tune do you mean the chip? And if that's the case I could say have 1 for performance and 1 for like, take it easy mileage type deal right? And do think there would be that much dif between the 2, in other words would it really be worth messin with?
R3, now while probably good sensible advice, tell me is that what you did? Go put on brakes? Yea, RIGHT!

I have done almost nothing but suspension and brakes. I have a baer track kit (glorified cobra brakes) in front and cobra brakes in back and a full MM 3-link & coil over suspension. I now have a sct pro-racer kit so I do my own tuning and after some 3 years with this project underway I'm about to slap in a big ol 5.4L. Power was the last thing on my list to mess with. Everything else should come first. Especially brakes. So yeah... I do practice what I preach. Cuz I already learned the hard way years ago.

on a multi-program chip you can have your stock tune and a high octane tune and a nitrous tune and a valet tune (how many depends on the chip). There will be almost no difference at all other than if you have it properly dyno tuned you can be reasonably confident that you won't blow it up whilst whipping it around town. If you want that kind of thing get yourself a SCT x-cal2 and go nuts. It's a helluva lot more flexible than a chip and you don't need a screwdriver, 2 sockets and a pair of pliers to use it.

Accolades to you R3 you have got to be one of the few pwople i've ever heard of going about it the right way unless it was a project where they didn't care when i got done or had the money to do it it just 1,2,3 and definitely not waiting 3yrs for the juice. Amazing patience! I'll bet that ride will be sweet when your done, and thanks for the tips.

I have this chip....but you need to hear my stupid story.

First, I bought a Superchips flasher....caused my car to ping, so I shipped it back. Then, I bought a Diablo chip. The tuner sent it to me with a tune on it for the wrong car. I waited 5 months to get it fixed.....then had to ask for my money back. Then, I got an SCT Extreme Flash Tuner. I had a tune for 87 Octane and one for 93.

Then, I added nitrous and I was able to add a nitrous tune. But, switching tunes was a bitch. So I traded it for a 4 Position SCT Chip.

Now that I have a blower, I have 4 custom dyno tunes. Performance Tune, Valet Tune, 89 Octane Tune, and "wife" tune.

I wish I was a s smart today as I was three years ago.

Moral of the story: Buy a quality product that can gorw with your needs tuned by a tuner that knows what they are doing.

AHHHHHH dont liten to these people that say "um you dont have enough mods done yet...spend the money on suttin else" crap. I would go ahead and get the Dyno tune with the 4 bank chip if you chose not to get the hand-held tuner. Why not get a mail order tune? well....the mail order tunes are not LIVE. Meaning ....You dont have the air/fuel readout while tuning to make sure that ratio is good......

I speak of my own experiences...

I also have the basic mods so far.....Flows Cat back....H-pipe....JLT Ram air intake...70mm Throttle Body a accufab plenum..and steeda pullies...
After i got those mods...i decided to get the SCT 4-BANK chip tuned on a DYNO...My tuner said it was good that I got her tuned cause...I was running SUPER LEAN due to the bigger Throttle body he said...yea..I only gained like 2HP and 10lbs of TQ..but the car Response so much better now and pulls harder.....heh

Yup.....hp does not tell the whole story.

What year is your car, and what trans? If it's an automatic, do rear gears and the SCT tune at the same time, as the speedo and trans shifting will need to be corrected anyway. I would have a good local tuner do it, so trans shift timing and feel can be tailored to what you like. You will also save some coin doing them together. The ability to have multiple tunes is a plus, however for a car as lightly modded as yours, the primary benefit would be the ability to run 87 octane to save money, and 93 when you wanted some extra power. This would be solely related to spark advance/knock threshold. And actually, I'd also recommend gears on a stick car, and for that you'll need to correct the speedo as well. Might as well do that with a tune, so you don't buy a speedcal box now, and a chip later. Consider using a flash tuner instead of a chip, the only downside is inability to change programs on the fly, and you may actually save money if the shop charges a fee for chip installation (ours does). Hope this helps!

It's a '97 5 Speed and I am fixin to do the rearend this weekend. I'm going with 3.73 gears. Once i get that done I know I gonna need a tune. I'm just outside of D/FW here in Texas, does anybody have a recomendation for a dyno-tune place in Dallas? Also I'm not real clear on these chips. Are all chips programable, and then some chips can hold 4 programs? is that the way that works? And then I can get a programmer and program them myself or I can have them programmed at a shop or over the counter? Is that about right or am I just really confused (like normal)?

Wheat 03-01-2007 06:23 AM

Well, with a '97 you're in luck, you can just change the speedometer gear on the speed sensor to get the correct MPH readings, so a tune isn't necessary. If you do decide to get a chip tune, my recommendation is to go to sctflash.com and on the home page, enter your zip code in the dealer locator to find someone near you. Contact them and discuss what can be done for you, I would definitely have a custom tune done by someone close by, who knows what they're doing. You can use either a chip or a flash tuner (programmer) on your year car, I'd go with the flash tuner.
