Which Transmission

Which transmission would be better for the track the
TKO-600 for Ford (650HP Road Race; Ratios: 2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.0, 0.82)
or
TKO-600 for Ford (650HP Street; Ratios: 2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.0, 0.64)

they are the same but the 2nd tranny's 5th gear is geared for highway... so your engine won't be @ high RPMs at highway speeds...

You shouldn't get into 5th gear on the 1/4 mile so its really up to you...

for a road course the .64 5th gear is crap. .82 is the same as 5th in cobra spec T56's. If you get to 5th gear on a road course, it's damn long anyway but I'd rather have the .82 and a set of 3.55's or 3.73's.

BTW... 2.87 1st gear is steep. Not a drag car kinda first gear. Hope it's for a track with curves.

i want the transmission to be good for drag and city/highway driving. and work well with my 4.10s.
and what would you consider a "drag car kinda first gear"

r3dn3ck 10-10-2006 01:44 PM

with 4.10's it'll be ok. It'll actually end up a lot like the stock first gear with a stock rear end gear. If you had 3.27's it would probably cause you to bog at launch or at least slow you down on your way to the 60' line.

Road course cars usually have pretty long first gears and close ratios. The race is in the turns for them not always just off the line. Drag cars are looking for fast 60' times so a lower ratio for first will help them to pop off the line.

The point I guess is that you need to do the math on each gear ratio that you change and see what it'll do at various speeds. Upping the ratio on your 1st gear and lowering on your rear gear balanced each other out, but failing to lower the rear gear would make the car slower in first and then familiar in 2nd - 5th. If you're road coursing then a slow first gear doesn't really matter... there's more than one lap to worry about and you'll only see first gear at the starting line.

since its a daily driver then the choice is clear get the TKo with the lower 5th gear for highway driving. if it was a road racer like redneck said the .87 5th gear would be where its at.

i want a good trans for the 1/4mile and good driveablity when i drive it on the street. so what is sounds like the tko wont be my choice. any suggestions? because eventually this car is going to just be a track rat!

PureStang 10-11-2006 03:45 AM

i know a guy thats putting 4.56's in w/ his viper spec trany

spike_africa 10-11-2006 05:51 AM

no the TKO is where its at for drag racing. Its a big beefy monster made for power shifting with some power behind it. Most of the manual mustang guys who drag race alot are running TKO 500's or 600's. I plan to upgrade to a TKO 600 in the future when my tranny blows from me powershifting on the bottle.

red281gt 10-11-2006 11:59 AM

Oh ok thats what i thought. But i dont want the car to feel like it has the stock rear gears in.because that would defeat the whole fact why i got the 4.10s

r3dn3ck 10-11-2006 03:27 PM

it'll only feel like stock (and not exactly stock... I'll have to do the math all the way to figure it for you) in first gear, after that you'll feel the gears all the way down the track. If you can get a custom 1st gear, then maybe a 2.95 1st gear would serve you better as a dual duty trans.
