Car jerks in 1st

Can anyone tell me why my GT wants to jerk itself apart in first gear. This is especially a problem at parking lot speeds. Or a slow pull out in traffic.

I will have the car around say ten MPH and maybe 14/1500 RPMS and if I give it any gas at all it jerks like a bronco -unless I ride the clutch. Two of my friends had the same problem with it, so I am fairly sure it is not the driver.

Im gonna go ahead and say it is the drivers that cause that problem. First gear is very touchy and once it jerks once and you dont fix it, it gets bad. Do you hear any type of noise coming from the tranny when it jerks?

that just sounds like u havent mastered the art of driving stick yet

There is no noise. I don't think it is me since I have been driving a stick for almost 20 years. But maybe Mustangs are different.

If you think it is the driver and not the car -then what am I doing wrong?

Agreed. It all has to do with driving technique, if it starts bucking and you dont know how to make it stop (you'll figure it out sooner or later), just push the clutch in and then let it out again to "restart" the gear.

I had the same problem after my 4.10's, but I got the hang of it. The easiest thing is to do is just shift into second, 1st is'nt really ment to drive in, just to get you started anyway.

Have the same problem with first. If I have to go that slow, I usually just let the engine idle in 2nd if I'm on a flat surface. This is mainly a result of the 3.38 1st gear ratio which makes the slightest of touches amplified that much more.

I defintely think manual Mustangs are different from other manual cars. The stock clutch on Mustangs are totally different feeling than other clutches Ive driven..This is a stock clutch were talking about?

BostonStang 10-02-2006 08:10 PM

The clutch and tranny are bone stock. I am planning on putting in 4:10's next week. Will that make a difference?

bassman97 10-02-2006 08:14 PM

That'll make it more sensitive. Just have a light touch and control it w/ the gas and clutch, as needed.

From the list ofyour mods I didn't see any timing changes (like a steeda timing adj or programmer) but advanced timing makes it worse for some reason. I had a timing adj way back when and once I got past 14 adv it would buck, under 14 and it felt normal (which is still very sensative)

bassman97 10-03-2006 07:33 AM

According to Steeda, they said that around 14° of advance would cause bucking and may throw a code. A little off topic but whatever...

ummm if you start in 1st gear you get goin- then ur off the clutch and you decide to just let of the gas and coast in 1st gear then decide to push the gas again that re-application of the throttle needs to be evver so gentle or else its gonna get shakey...or like others have said just shift into second

blownstang 10-03-2006 08:14 PM

It's a common thing when going around 5mph. Just push the clutch in.

I have the same problem. I just converted to a 5-speed and have 4:10s in the rear. My wife hates it.
