Oil level on dipstick?

The manual calls for 5 quarts of oil, but after I have fully drained all my oil and added 5 quarts back, the oil line is always about .5cm to.8cm over the full line on my dipstick. Is this normal? Should I be worried at all about overfill?

Dipsticks in general are never totaly accuret. My f150 called for 6 quarts yet when you added 6 it read at the bottom of the stick. Just run the 5 it calls for and you will be fine.

You need 6 quarts, 5 for the pan, and one for the filter.

My manual only calls for 5 quarts

StormsGT 09-22-2006 02:26 PM

You may want to double check that. I'm sure its 6.

bassman97 09-22-2006 03:04 PM

Also, depends on your filter too, some may make it where you need 6, some a little less, some a little more. My K&N oil filter requires me to use 6.5 quarts.

Run 5.5 QTS.

I know for a fact that the the specs sometimes can be wrong. I have an 01 cobra mustang and am running 6.75 QTS of oil in it even though the manual says 6. I have heard to many horror stories of people spinning bearing and ****ing up there car by this.

I guarantee you that you cannot fit a whole quart of oil in the filter.

bassman97 09-22-2006 07:06 PM

It's approxametly a quart, more like 1/2 or more including all the passages in the block.

i put 5.5 quartes in my 96 gt figureing a 1/2 quarte for the oil filter---yet still my low oil light cam on once in a while and also on the dipstick it barely mmesured anything--i let it go like that for 2 weeks then just added the other half quart and now everything is good no light-dipstick reads a lil low but its fine..

The non P.I motors call for 6 quarts. Not sure about the others. Check your manual.

do they--i dont have the manual lol..but i had them check up ther at the autoparts store and they looked in the computer and it called for 5 quarts

bassman97 09-23-2006 06:23 PM

My manual calls for 6 and since the engine was the same from 96-04 (besides heads), I would assume it's the same. Also, the Redline power packs for the 96-00 and 01-04 Mustangs use the same amout on oil (6qt). 5 quarts were used in the old 302.
P.S: An autoparts store usually isn't the best place to get your info. For example, CarQuest was trying to convince me that the 8.8" was only in trucks and that they said the gasket that they found for me was for my car (though it was for a Dana rear since it had the characteristic shape of one).

Every time I change my oil or have it changed I have to put 6.25 quarts in it. You can run a lil less or a lil more. Its not gonna matter that much as long as it is around that.

csledd 09-24-2006 04:48 AM

lol this is like a huge problem.. it's a myth of how much damn oil to run in your car. My manual also says 5.. autozone will tell me 6... research on the internet tells me 5.5.. and then i seen a screenshot from a ford mechanic saying to use 5.25. I use 5.5.

The manual for my 96' GT said 6. I think I'll belive ford.

I checked my manual again today and it says "5 quarts (includes filter change)"
