Difference between 01 Cobra and 04 Mach 1 Engine?

Just wondering what the difference is between an 01 cobra and 04 mach 1 engine? Both 4.6 DOHC 32valve engines but mach 1 is rated at 310hp and cobra at 320? Supposedly both are underrated but is the mach just underrated more to make cobra owners feel better?

Mustang Monthly

"Some people assume that the Mach 1's four-valve engine is identical to the DOHC 4.6 used in the '01 Cobra. True and false. Basically, it's the same engine, except for the Mach 1, Team Mustang enhanced the performance with high-flow four-valve heads, higher compression, new cams (from the 5.4 Navigator, reportedly with the same lift as the '01 Cobra cams but with different overlap and duration), revised calibrations, and improved exhaust manifolds that are also port-matched to the heads. The result is, well, actually less advertised horsepower than the '01 Cobra--305 to 320--something that may be attributed to the Cobra's marketing status as the top-of-the-line performance Mustang"

So in other words my engine is better than an 01 cobra, but ford just didnt advertise it as such because the cobra is supposed to be the best?

Yeah, pretty much. 01 cobra owners don't like it because cobra's are supposed to RULE ALL, but unless they are an 03/04 that's not the case. Here is another good article that compares a 99 Cobra with a couple of mods versus a stock mach and 01 bullitt.

I personally think the Cobra is a bit better as it tends to pull better in the low end, plus for an N/A Cobra, you can put a higher rear end gear ratio in the car. You put a 4.10 into a Mach and it seemingly falls flat on its face in the upper RPMs.

I was waiting for someone with a cobra to show up and set me straight! COBRA's RULE ALL!

But seriously, I would agree on the low end comments cause my mach doesn't pull from 0-3,000...I guess the live axle is the reason for Mach pretty much jumping out to a quick lead when tested againts each other....I don't know  As for the 4:10's, I'm not sure, but they for sure would help in reducing 1/4 times, but not from a roll race going 50mph.

One thing that wasnt mentioned was the crank. I believe the 5-speed mach's got the forged crank and auto mach's had a cast crank.

I had a choice when I bought my new Mach, and I chose the Mach 1. I like it better than the cobra just for the fact that it's rarer. And yes, the manuals have a forged crank and the auto's have a cast one.

I know the mach is made from aluminum, and the cobra's block is cast iron(at least on the 03 04 ones).
