Un hook fuel line, Help!

OK guys, two weeks ago my fuel pump went out and everyone here was great enough to give me the info and confidence to replace the pump myself.

I got the pump yesterday, I went with motorcraft replacement that I saved $75 off retail. The pump is the original with plastic basket, pump, metal cover and new electical plugs on it. Plug and play, right?

The car is up on jack stands, I have lowered the tank, and pulled off the metal cover and pulled out the old pump and assembly. One problem that is killing me and keeping this project from being completed.

I can't disconnect the fuel line from the metal cover that bolts to lthe top of the tank. I bought the plastic fuel line removers from Auto Zone and they worked for removing and replacing the fuel filter. But I can't for the life of me get those little plastic mother effers to work on the fuel line on top of the tank. :wallbash:

Any tips at all I would be thankfull for. Is there a trick in using these little plastic mother effers :wallbash: that could help me? And is there a better tool out there I can get that could make the job easier?

Thanks for the support, Mark M :stupid:

you need the metal one for that you can rent it for free. those plastic ones wont cut it for that.

If you're just replacing the pump then you dont need to take out the stock basket or anything. You also dont need to remove any fuel lines. Refer to the focus pump install write up on my site, www.dndgarage.net.

leave the stock top portion of the fuel basket. or just tank the pump itself out and put the new pump in. you should only have to remove one line to get the pump out along with all of those tiny screws keeping the cover on the basket and pump. its real easy i didnt have to use that fuel line removing tool thing.

edit i just re-read what you did and all i have to say now is leave that metal cover alone and put in the new basket, just remove the sending unit from the old basket and put it on the new one and hook everything back up. its ok to re use the metal cover.
