Question how do I prepare (clean) dash for carbon fiber kit?

Hello fellow mustang lovers!

Ok so i've finally decided to purchase a carbon fiber dash kit for my 2000 coupe. Now i've read that if you use armorall for the dash the kit will not stick, even if you armorall'ed it 3 months ago. Is this true? If so, how do I prepare my dash for the kit to stick? A sponge, water, and some sort of cleaner/degreaser?

The kit I am getting is from ebay for 99 bucks, what do you think?

Thanks for your input,

ceez

PS- would this color would look good on gray/light brown interior? I think so.

Dont use armorall or a detergent of any kind.

Best thing to use is a rubbing alcohol by far. Truthfully, I'm not a fan of the carbon fiber, I think it's gonna be cheap and crappy quality for 99 bux for that many pieces.

Here's what I did with my interior for 15 bux and 3 hours.

whitethunder46, that white on black looks very very good on that stang, with the black leather....daaaamn!

And how much is too much rubbing alcohol when cleaning the surfaces? Just get some cottons/sponge and rub away?

so you mention 15 bucks... where did you get the white trim for that price.

gonna be cheap and crappy quality for 99 bux for that many pieces
, cheap as in workmanship or cheap as in the style/look of the dash after install? Just curious.

thkz again

It's all factory pieces of trimming. Just took them out and painted them 4-5 coats with Dupont vinyl interior spray paint. 15 bux was the cost of the cans.

What you're looking into may not be cheap and crappy like I said, but it's not going to be the best overall quality in my mind, both the look and style.

Does that actually replace the trims or are they simply overlays?

The reason I say about price is I've seen kits that are only 5 pieces, aluminzed brushed, and are 200 bux. I believe it's the Roush stangs that have these.

BTW, welcome to the boards.

Well then that's a nice paint job on those parts, unfortunately they dont sell carbon fiber paint!!!

I've seen kits with less pieces and they run 300+ bucks, I am debating wether or not get these, if they suck then they get negative a comment!!!! Or a slap on the wrist if you ask me.

And yes, they are overlays with 3m adhesive. Can I actually find the whole part in carbon fiber? If so then those must cost an arm & leg...kinda like gas prices!!!

thkz again,

ceez

If they are like some I have seen they are probably just carbon fiber printed vinyl that sticks onto the interior pieces...........not worth 1 cent.....just beware, but i have seen good kits that are hard molded pieces that contour the factory pieces ,they are ok

The best ones are the Molded ones but if you are spending that much might as well paint them. Real carbon fiber molded ones will be very expensive and they will not have a big selection. I have Aluminum style ones on my truck, they are not as good as if they were real aluminum but better than seeing all plastic. I left the wood console to add contrast but you dont want to overload and add all the pieces that come with the kit. I had a 60plus kit but had about 20 pieces that I did not use. I also added silver AC and radio buttons.

ok, molded = better BUT more $$$. Assuming molded means that it already comes in the shape of the actual part you're placing over correct? This way it fits better?

Now I am debating what to do...damn this online shopping! cant really see/feel what you're getting.

thkz everyone for your input,

ceez

Thumbs up

Here's the kit I got.. http://www.wooddash.com/item/FORD_Da...USTANG_2001_03

I really like it, I think it definately gives the interior a whole new appeal.
Also, the set comes with a "special" cleaning substance to use. If u like, I'll take some photos and post later today.

I had the Brushed aluminum on my old stang....I took it off after a while cause it looked kinda cheesy. It didn't fit all that well around the corners/edges.

I know someome already mentioned this, but the best way is either painting the actual parts or getting the molded versions....the molded is expensive, but looks much better.

Those look nice,v6ceez has to decide if he likes the fact that it does not cover the entire trim.

Those trims look very nice man, that's exatly what I want to put on mine, thanks for the chance to view them on stang!!!

I checked out the link you sent me. Did you get the Simulated or Genuine Carbon Fiber kit? Other than the price what's the difference between the two?

I got the Genuine......

the Genuine is real carbon fiber material, while the simulated is just that. I figure if you're going to spend that much ne way, u should do it right.

I luv my carbon fiber, but 2 do over again..... would've painted first, then put on CF.
If you order the kit, it comes with a cleaner. Be extra carefull not 2 get the cleaner on any area that will not be covered. The cleaner will "strip" ne place it touchs. I recommend using some good painting tape of the areas that the kit will not cover b4 cleaning the areas it will.

and if u want custom pieces (that may not be with the kit, or 2 completely cover interior), check this site out:

http://dragonplate.com/#

I haven't priced them yet, you'd probally have to call. Found this site last week, thinking of replacing all exterior molding and that area between the hood and windshield with CF.

I am sorry for my very naive questions, but I am total n00b when it comes to this stuff, here they go:

Why would you of painted the areas? What color and why would that of helped?

If the cleaner strips the dash areas, then if for some reason i get tired of it and want to remove them or they get scratched will the dash get all messed up?

Thkz again.

Thought of painting some parts either black or charcoal (instead of that ford greyish color), the problem is now if I decide to paint it, I will have to cover the CF trim and it will probally be a pain in the @$$ to get to the edges where the CF starts.
And yes, if u use the cleaner that comes with the kit, and then decide not to use ithe CF, or down the road u choose to remove the CF, it will look like @$$ and u will need to paint it.

Default Black CF look good?!?

Now that I have good info on what to look for with CF it's time for some opinions, do you think that black carbon fiber would look good with my interior?

Thanks,

ceez

I personally would just paint it black. I think the carbon fiber has too much going on. IMO. Good luck tho!
