The best way is to get as much old coolant out and start with straight water. How you do this is up to you.You can remove the thermostat housing and the lower hose and flush the block with a water hose or loosen the top hose and allow the engine to flush the old coolant out. With the last method you must keep adding water untill it runs out as clear as you can get it and avoid being scalded by hot water.
When the old coolant is out of the engine tighten everything back up and add a cooling system cleaner.Get the strongest cleaner you can find because most aren't very strong anyway. It will take a while to really work and clean up a truly corroded cooling system so I put in the cleaner this weekend and figure on dumping it out on the next.
The final flush will be very important because you should get all the cleaner out before you add the final mix of coolant. There are drains on the side of the engine block that aren't easy to get to so you can't get all the water and cleaner out just by draining the radiator. You will have to flush the block with water just like you did when you started.Get it to run out as clear as you can.
I start the refill by adding a bottle of Redline Water Wetter, then add the anti freeze.Start the engine and as the engine warms up keep adding water and anti freeze untill you get the mixture you want.Use a coolant tester to be sure of the freeze level of the coolant.I let the engine mix the water and anti freeze and adjust the mix that way. After you get the engine filled most of the way let everything cool down and refill as necessary.Check the level after a couple of days and fill to the full mark.
