Like the title says, something needs to be done. Maybe alter the way accounts are created by using a different captcha method. Either way, the spam here is far worse than any other board I'm on.

I think some of these are human spammers now, just looking at how their methods have changed. Maybe have moderators approve new accounts, so that they can review profiles and see who is suspicious and who just looks like a spammer maybe?

I've seen some that looked possibly human. I don't think the majority of them are, though.

Whatever is going on, we must remind them (if they are human) that what they are doing is illegal. Maybe "The Cop" can look into this? Because we are clearly being targeted.

We should maybe also look into having moderators that approve threads before they actually go public on the site maybe. Then you can't have some new guy that thinks the link is okay and his computer gets taken over because no one approved the thread before it got started.

No, that's just going to be a pain in the *** for everyone, mods included. Plus, a lot of the spammers have just been posting in 4 year old threads anyway.

We need the admins to give a few select members who are on regularly and will not abuse the power limited ban hammer abilitys to fight these spammers

The top admin should have those abilities in vbulletin. I know that in older models they had that feature, not too sure about this version.

I'm with Ben's (Lazer's) suggestion. This **** is getting outrageous. Not only are these *** plugs bringing up old threads, they're making new ones. Too bad they can't just die.

I think the Mods hands are tied, the "admins" don't do anything for the site with upkeep or to update the vBulletin software so after a while it gets like this. Without the updates the spammers learn how to hack the old software and start spamming the **** out of the board. Eventually the forum will crash and the "admins" will suddenly appear and go through another round of updates. The site will be OK for a couple of months after then it will all start again.. It's a cycle that hs been continuing for years.

Just one of the problems that come along with having a corporately owned forum, all that they worry about is paying the bill to keep the forum running and do nothing to make sure that it functions correctly.

Just yet another reason why the old mods need to be flushed and have active replacements put in their place to help restore order, Chris and Dustin can't be on here all the time.

You hit the nail on the head at least in what you said in the first paragraph.

To be honest, this site would be a lot better off if it were hosted on a privately owned shared server. That way the admins could do some proper upkeep. A server that could handle this board would only run $40 per month.

I agree with what spike said in another thread. If you guys really want to fix the problem click on the contact us link and ask them to fix the problem(s) or give the admins more privileges.

I just sent them a message so should everyone else.
