Question How do you drag race with a auto trans?

I got an 01 GT with an auto trans. Bone stock! What is the best way to run these trans in the 1/4 mile? Turn off the overdrive for starters, right?

Then should I shift the car manually starting in 1st and so on or should I make the run in drive and let the car automatically shift itself?

The reason I ask is because the modern trans on this car seems to slide into gear when I shift manually from first to second to third and it takes a long time to hit the next gear. When I step on it in drive, the shifts seem to be more firm and have less neutral time between shifts.

What's the best way to run this stock car in a drag race?

Thanks Mark M
