What makes a good driver?

Just wondering if you guys have any tips for being a "good driver" when it comes to racing either on street or strip. I always hear you guys talkin about whether the driver is good or not when racing. So what are some things I can do to win a race?

spike_africa 05-22-2006 06:52 PM

pratice and um pratice some more lol. That is what makes a good driver.

Zaff03GT 05-22-2006 06:55 PM

but what specifically will make you beat another car

B-rett 05-22-2006 07:01 PM

quick shifts and traction

Launching correctly, knowing when to shift, and shifting quickly I guess would be the top 3.

Zaff03GT 05-22-2006 07:09 PM

what rpm should i shift at with my mods

spike_africa 05-22-2006 07:21 PM

5,500rpms would be where you want to shift any of our cars unless you have full intake and exhuast setups and or cams.even with full exhaust its so so on shifting any higher, they just dont make power past that.

96gtstang 05-22-2006 07:51 PM

ehhh experience is where its at...ther is no replacement for experience

TEXASPAUL 05-22-2006 08:10 PM

There are all sorts of ideas on this subject.
I have mine set at 5,800 and here is how I came up with that number.
My car peaks at 5,300-5,400 rpm, when it shifts it drops about 1,800 rpms. At 5,300 it would fall to 3,500 which is below it's power curve so it would fall flat a bit until it built back up to 4,000. I set it to 5,800 and it falls back to 4,000 and pulls better. If you look at my dyno sheet you will see even though it's falling off after 5,350 it's falling slowly and making more power than it does below 4,000.
As for as what makes a good driver? I would not know, I have an automatic.

thats generally a good philosophy, i allways figure shift at your peak horsepower, and then it should fall into your peak torque
(like you said)

I've always shifted at 5800-6000:punk: My car ran 13.45@102 three years ago with only a O/R X and welded in Flowmasters, a shifter and drop-in K&N......nothing else......that's even OEM Gatorbacks. A year later it ran 12.89@104 on drag radials and a few more mods...still shifting at 5800-600. Works good for me:banana:

Lol, that's why I drive an auto. I know my limitations.

good driver?

You know someones a good driver when driving they react the best possible way when most people would react differently...

for ex...

bad driver (true story unfortunately)- girl is driving down the road, curvey road, its getting dark out... she sees a deer... so guess what she does... what anyone else would do... slammed the brake, turned the wheel... lost control (cause she was a woman???) and hit a tree... (she was in an SUV) that was a rather sharp turn... basicly there was no way to avoid that deer...

heres what she should have done...

me... pickup truck... dark... very similar road... comin home from fishin, 2 buddies in the car... music up... driving a bit too fast... deer... I had a good tenth of a second to think... I plowed that mother ****er... really good thing I didn't chance swerving cause theres was a huge pot hole... woulda ****ed me over...

heres another...

every see those videos... its snowung... and 1 guy rear ends another who reends another and so on...

ha ha... well that happened to me n my bud... we were out in a ****y ass truck... snowblowing yards... comin home... 3 car crash... they all hit their brakes and slid into the car in front of them...

my bud... stepped on the gas a tit and turned the wheel nice in easy...

so theres all those racing factors and whatnot... but where its important is safety...

cause if you can't drive safely... then ya sure as hell shouldn't be racing...

ROFL!!! I thought you were gonna say you hit the gas and swerved a bit to avoid it. "I plowed that mother****er..." LOL!!!

no... if i had swerved and it the gas... that woulda been mad too...

no... the deer may **** up a car... and tree will not only **** up a car... but everyone inside...

lmao... there was blood and hair all over the front of the truck... the whole undercarriage was a mess... lmao...

but whats awesome bought ford trucks is they are built ford tough... not a scratch, dent, ding or crack...
