chaning product reveiws

I know like others they want to hear what others have to say about products that have been used. Well I have posted a few ratings on products and they all have been edited and had most of the bad things I had to say taken out. Why is that. I didnt bash the product in any of them I told it like it was. For example I left a rating on the Spec stage 2 I told them it was not a lighter pedal feel like others were saying infact its heavier which is nice if you ask me. I also talked about the chatter and how it was really bad till I broke it in and even so unless you give it some rpms it will chatter. Yet alot of this was taken out. Why are you all editing peoples ratings I just dont get it.

Uh-oh......

spike_africa 10-09-2008 08:06 PM

It just bothers me that they do that. I didn't use any profanity at all, just told it like it is. In fact I checked the other items I listed feedback on they did the same thing to all of them.

Dustin, I'm pretty sure that this has come up before, around the time Emilie was here. Don't particularly remember what the excuse was but I remember it was pretty lame. AM, don't allow reviews if you're not going to leave them as stated. :comeandgetsome:

spike_africa, I want to thank you for bringing this to my attention. When I read your post yesterday, I was pretty pissed...and so were my bosses when I brought the situation to their intention. I can definitely tell you that no one here would have told anyone to intentionally change a review. I mean I would be pretty pissed if someone changed a review that I wrote...what would be the point...why not just make up a fake review under a fake name for pete's sake at that point?

I did some digging and basically what seems to have happened is the persons in charge of proofreading and approving the reviews got more then a little carried away with the definition of proofreading. The only things they were supposed to correct for were spelling and severe grammatical errors. The proofreaders thought they were doing the company a favor by taking the extra step...but they thought wrong. Corrective measures have been taken to ensure this does not happen again. There were several discussions between the parties involved and management behind closed doors that I am really glad I was not a part of, if you know what I mean!

I am also requesting on Monday that your edited review be taken down from the website since it does not accurately reflect how you felt about the product, unless you tell me otherwise to leave it up. I would also like to thank you for helping to bring this improvement to our website, maybe I can send you a free T-Shirt and/or Gift Certificate or something? Shoot me a PM with your information.

Thanks,

Nick

Haha! I accept! :t:

Thanks man, I don't want someone to lose a job over it though. I just thought it was kind of well shady to edit reviews like that. I know my spelling and grammar are not 100% but a lot of my review was missing or edited heavily. But it more or less made me wonder what was going on over at am.com cause you all have never done anything bad to me or anyone here that I have seen. I just thought it was very strange.
I sent you a PM.

Stephen4036 10-16-2008 06:05 PM

Bib props to nick and AM for ethics in practice. It's not always easy walking that thin line.

FWIW, this sort of thing (editing reviews) is kinda to be expected on the intarweb especially as consumer buying power shifts to more and more online purchases and companies are trying to avoid missing sales because some douche left a nasty review. They can't tell the difference between a justifiable complaint and old fashioned sour-grapes/asshattery. I'm not saying it's right or good but you should be surprised to see it not happen really.

Nick, pimp it mang. Go ahead and pop the collar.

Just replied to your PM. Thanks again, what was going on was definitely not in line with company policy and this probably would have kept going on for a while if you had not let me know about it.

Unfortunately you are probably going to see a lot of that happening with some of the stores you encounter whether online, or even in radio/tv commercials for retail outlets. Its just the way advertising has always been.

But on our site we don't want our reviews to be just advertising, we want them to be useful to both the customer and us. Reviews are a great way to help identify what is a good product to continue to sell, and what is not. If the reviews are edited to make everything seem 100% peachy and keen, then our Purchasing Department would have no idea that the product is having complaints. Some reviews are obviously going to be "old fashioned sour-grapes/asshattery" and those probably shouldn't be put up at all as they will just confuse the potential buyer. But a genuine review with useful information that might point out a not so perfect side of a product is a great way for a consumer to make an informed decision on what to purchase.

So on that note...popping collar now!

Wanted to let you know I got the package and wanted to thank you again for handling all of this. Also good guess on my size being a large.

I've had the same thing happen to me that Dustin described. It was about the CDC decklid panel. I just said that it is a great piece, but comes up a little on the edges of the lid and it was a little difficult to install. When I found my review online, it had been edited, too. They had taken maybe 4 or 5 short sentences to 1. But I didn't think anything of it, basically what Red said.

Since you are incredibly awesome and you have already sent me a shirt, I will let you slide this time. Next time it happens, I want a free Cervinis Concept Hood! :p

Nick, just to keep you updated, I submitted a review for the black SHR billet fuel door for 05-09 Mustangs. I kept a word document saved with the review that I submitted. Today, I went back to check it and it is there, word for word. So apparently, that 'little talk' must have worked. :)

@ Stephen: I don't think that would be enough, hahaha.
