trunk mount battery?
 

has anyone mounted there battery in the trunk? i baught a kit from summit, but i got underneeth to look at how i was going to mount it, and it looks like im going to have to drop the gas tank? do i have to or is it just a b*tc# to get to? does any body have any sugestions on where to put the battery cut off switch? any help would be awsome.

I have not done this but I have considered doing it. Ideally, the passenger side, in the rear of the trunk would be best for weight distribution. What kind of cutoff switch do you have?

thats where i want to put it. but it apears the gas tank is in the way (go figure). the cut off switch is a 2 position, on-off... has to be mounted outside so the switch is easy to get to.

im thinking maybee one day ill put a fuel cell in the car, and run the switch in the filler hole, but that is aways down the road i need something for now. i have six to eight inches from the fender to the frame, then right next to the frame is the gas tank. i tried to put it as close to the fender as posible but then i cant get the lid off. so i move it out and it sits right ontop of the gas tank and frame. help me

ok buddy... this is coming from somebuddy that has mounted the batt in the trunk. i just did it a couple months ago. DONT ever run your battery cable or switch next to the fuel lines or tank. what happens if it should ground out? kaboom. heres what i did. i put the alluminum box that i made, in the passenger side, as far back as it could go, cut out a small square in the carpet, mounted the box to the car, drilled a hole for a drain tube(in case the acid leaks), ran the tube straight down, then i used plastic zip ties to secure the batt cable to the bottom of my car. incase it grounds out, the zip ties will just melt and the cable will fall off onto the ground, creating less of a fire hazard. i used a moroso disconect (dont want to be cheap on this, unless you like fires), and mounted it in a place that if i had to kill the power, i could. i put it underneath my arm rest. this took a little fabricating, but a dremil made it easy. i could show you some pics of the while thing if you want. but it is scca approved, so i guess thats cool...

its a 95' model. id like to keep it as far to the right and rear as possible. nhra rule book states that if a battery is mounted in the trunk it has to have the main power mounted out side the vehicle easily accesible. that is one of my main concerns is to keep it from the fuel. thanx for the input. i would like to put it in a place that not everybody can see.

How about a dry cell battery? they're like half the size of oem's. then you could put it in the spare tire compartment. about the switch... nhra rules can state whatever they want... put yourself in the driver seat(no pun intended), if you are ever in a situation where you need to disconnect all the power, without having to get out of the car (if you are able to), and turn the switch off; wouldnt it be nice to have a disconnect in a place that you could easily get to, or in your case, a secondary disconnect? and if you are so concerned about keeping it away from the fuel, why did you try mounting it on top of the tank??? i think that if you are going by the nhra rules, dont they want a fuel cell in your car? im not sure... and by the way, are you running your car in the nhra? if not, who cares about the rules? and if you are still having a problem with your trunk mount battery kit, send it back. i dont think nhra cares about being able to see it...

those pics would be great. i want to mount it as far back and to the right of the trunk as possible. i have some pics of the disconnect switch and the trunk of my car as well. nhra rule book states that the switch has to be mounted outside the car and easily accesible. but i dont want it really noticeable. ( outta site outta mind ). i also liked your idea though, i was thinking on the console ( drivers side ) and painting it flat black so its not very noticeable. the seat will slide forward so it will be hard to see. i dont think it will be obstucted, and still very easy to get to. i looked in my console and ther is no room for it to be mounted inside of it.

yeah that last reply was before i saw speedfreeks, my bad. no in not that retarded to mount it on top of the gas tank, thank you. but where the bolts would go through are right next to the edge of the tank and guess what the tank is about 3/4" from the frame rail. and yes i do plan on running it in some nhra events ( aslong as your consistant you get money ). no nhra does not mandate that you have a fuel cell.

so you are now thinking of mounting it inside the car? what about nhra rules? hey you were the one trying to mount it next to the gas tank, right? if you could fit it, guess what, it would probaly be there right now huh? and you wouldnt be asking for help? last try... how about the glove box? or right by the e brake area? the trick way to do it, is drilling a hole just big enough for the switch (switch arm removed) to pop through, then put the arm back on it. like maybe the side that is in your pic, but a little bit higher up, so you have room for the connection junk behind the plastic... just trying to help
