Difference Gears make?
How big of a difference does gears make to a mustang. I am not heavily modded yet but in the process. Whats the difference between the gears (i know 4.10 is short drag like gears)?
What would be good for my 95 5.0 Auto daily driver? And how much does it cost to install them? |

One good question is what your gear ratio is right now as to what kind of difference it will make for you. A 3.73 would be probably be a good performance compromise with an auto on the street. Autos have a bit taller trans gear ratios so it takes more rear end gear versus a manual. My understanding is that an auto needs a 3.73 to feel like a manual 3.55.
When I'm thinking about gear ratios I always look at speed calculators online with my tire size, rear end gear, and overdrive ratio to see how many rpms I would be turning on the highway. If you are not racing I'd suggest 3.55 or 3.73 on the slightly sportier side. |
4.10's and you'll never look back.
|
yea go w/ 4.10's especially w/ an auto....
|
well i hit a wall(mentally) so far i have people supporting 3.73/3.55 and ones that say strictly 4.10
|
by the way the gears I have in there now are stock. i think its 2.73?

how many miles do you put on the car daily/weekly?? is it your daily driver?? are they mostly highway or city miles?? i told you to get the 4.10s because you really get to enjoy them in an auto because the shifting is done for you. in a manual you have to shift out of first almost immediatly. ou lose a little top speed and sacrifice a little mpg depending on how you drive, but the smile factor is imho, worth it. |

I added it all up, gears+new bearing kit+installation+tuner= about 1000$ ish depending on qaulity of the things you buy.
|
Get 4.10's and go to some different shops and get quotes.
|
That is what I am getting for my car here shortly.
http://www.americanmuscle.com/xcal2-...r-oil-kit.html And I have two local shops that gave me $200 installation quotes and another shop that wants $500 and he will buy everything, install and warranty it for life. If you spend $1000 your getting ripped off! |

just go with 4.10's your AOD will thank you for the stop and go traffic. |
The 5L is not like the 2v where it likes to rev even with stock heads/intake. I guess depending on what type of driving you do and if you like drag racing I would go 3.73 or 4.10 depending on those choices. I would however not waste time with 3.55 gears in your car.

So wait, it costs only 250 for install, gears, and fluids +/-50?
|
i wonder how much livernois motorsports will charge. i trust their work and they are pretty close. hopefully there trustworthy work isnt worth a few more nickles than i want to spend
|
CJ pony parts installed mine for $599 all parts included

no, you buy the gears separate from american muscle for a better price and take them to an installer.

I don't care what anyone tells you... DON'T FEAR THE GEAR. 4.10's are HANDS DOWN the best mod for the money.
|
i know its not huge especially since i dont have a ton of mods but what type of power increase would i be looking at? any ideas?
|
about $800 with fluid and the bearing rebuild kit and fluids and the installations.
|
I can't say for the Auto, but for my manual I'd never exceed 3.73's. I'd probably be turning 3k RPM @ 70mph in 5th gear with 4.10's.. Probably push 6k at anything over 100mph. I know I'm gonna catch shit for this but.. Honestly, if I had my choice I would probably go with 3.55's for a Manual. I voted 3.73's for your auto.

anyway besides that i turn 2600 rpms at 70 and at 75 im close to 2800. 4.10 gears will add 200 rpms to those speeds in overdrive. like what was said above dont fear the gear or sell yourself short with 3.55's unless you have a torque monster and like to run skinny 245 tires. |

Same reason I am not sure if I am gonna go 4.10 or 3.73, is because I already know what it traps now in the 1/4 and its gonna be on the limiter if I get 4.10s for sure in my car. |
