My 5.0 has just started intermittently backfiring at low RPM's and seems like I'm loosing a cylinder, but when I give it more gas and get to higer RPM it picks up again. I'm thinking either the timing chain or injectors are going bad. any input?

 

Kind of sounds like what happened to my car. I replaced my Mass Air Flow Sensor and it fixed the problem. Well I fixed it at first and by the time I fixed it my friend already got me a new one. :/ LoL I could be wrong with your problem, but that sounds like the same thing that happened to me. My car tried to die, RPMS while idling will go up and down, below 500.

hmm, I didn't think of that. I have a K&N intake on the car. It's been on the car for a few months now and no problems until now. Funny thing is I only run 89 or higher octane. I need to fill up and the local gas station only had 87. This didn't start happening until I used that crappy fuel but since then I've used octane booster and I have filled up with 93

 

Mine was stock, but it did help it. How I found it was that was because I had my friend do the car test thing and it came up as that. I would take it and have them do a test to find out the problem and make sure. I don't know the fuel by numbers, but I was using premium which I believe is 93 octane, then after I found out I'm just wasting money I went down to Regular which my brother says it's 87. If that is the problem or you feel like spending a feel bucks, get the Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner. It fixed mine, but like I said I already had a new one by the time mine was fixed. It will take awhile to kick in and fix it though.

Question: Is your gas burning faster too? That's what mine did.

 

yeah, it seems like the gas is burning a bit faster. and the check engine light is on, but it goes off when you hit i guess a certain airflow or something idk

 

I wouldn't know about the Check Engine light, mine stays on because of something else. HAHA if you want to say **** it and go spend I think like $10.00 or less on the Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner, give it a try. Might save your self some time. I could be wrong.

I've got back firing and faser fuel burn, but thats it, i think the check engine light could be the 02 sensors though. I can hook it up to a diagnostic check for like $35

 

check your timing might need to be advanced and change you O2 sensors mine did the same thing fixed the problem.

 

Any autoparts store will read that code for free and then we can help you figure out whats going on with your car.

 

I was thinking it was the O2 sensors. And I misdiagnosed my car, it is back firing but its also misfiring, thats what i was refering to

 

What?? I hope you mean lower fuel mileage! And not any parts store will retrieve codes for free. That year is not OBDII. Most parts stores that do that in my experience only to that on ODBII equipped vehicles which for the most part is 96 and up. Good luck.
