Cold air intake worth the bother?
 

Just wondering if a cold air intake is worth the money. Is it a "noticeable" power increase? Does it affect fuel mileage in any way??

I see some conflicting opinions through some various posts?

General concesus seems to be stick with K&N filter in stock housing and remove air silencer in fenderwell?

That is...unless you want a flashy underhood appearance. I may have just answered my own question? :rolleyes:

FWIW, I installed a MAC intake on my 99' F150, and had mediocre results -- it seemed to take away bottom end, but did feel and improvement in upper RPM range?

I have no idea if that is how one would react with the 5.0?

You answered your own question.

Upper RPM range in a basic bolt on is usually a throttle body and plenum.

The CAI didnt' seem worth the investment on the truck. I guess I'll stick a K&N in it like stated above.

Still struggling on gear choice, though. Was considering 3.55 or 3.73....but dont' want to kill my fuel mileage.

Because of how cheap you can get intakes for the 5L just get a intake setup for it.

Are you suggesting I get an intake kit for it?

I do already have a K&N filter for the car given to me from the previous owner who purchased it but never installed it because her mechanic told her they cause problems, so she got scared and left it on a shelf in the garage. She gave it to me when I purchased the car, just haven't put it in.

So what now? Buy a CAI or just stick with the K&N and remove snorkel??

You can get wicked cheap ones like the moroso setup and the like. Just get whatever cheap one you like. And the filter would not mess up the car by the way.

imo, get the cheapest one you can find....ie ebay. they will all give you the same results. waste of money if you ask me.

A CAI is worth the money, I know, I just put one on (cheapy off e-bay, 47.00 shipped, I got an increase in h.p and an increase in fuel mileage.

Ford cut the size of the intake at the horn to a little less than 2/12 inch’s, they did the right thing and then choked it down to where granny couldn’t hear no umph when she juiced it.
You could get away with cutting that horn off, but I think it is worth the money to do an aftermarket CAI, you will get even better air intake.
If people aren’t getting better performance with this cheap add on there is probably other problems with the vehicle, things like leaking plug wires, fuel filters or just worn out cars.

Leaking plug wires?............. Hmmmm I better check mine and make sure they aint leaking anything....... Hell THAT may be the reason my blinker fluid is always low! Wow thanks for the tip man! Hahaha! I'll give you a tip too.... check your muffler bearings next time your under your hood!

The muffler bearing is under the hood? Know wonder I never could fined it...I've been looking around the tail pipes.
