Default Gear Ratio

Hey,

I was wondering I read a little on gears and how they work but I'm not sure which ones are worth buying... I see like 4.10 Ratio and then I see 4.30 and 4.56 which would you guys recommend on buying? If this has already been answered let me know and I will be happy to search for it.

Thank you,
~Nate

There are a lot of threads on this, as for which gears are best for you depends on what your goals are with the car. 4:10's are probably as high as you want to go with a manual for daily driving. I dont have a 5.0, i have an 04 gt with 4:10's and i love em, she is an auto.
A lot of people with manuals go for 3:90's or 3:73's so you dont have to shift at 5mph. lol.

is this an all out drag car? got any other mods?

Its not gonna be a drag car its more along the lines of street racing lol, pretty big around here to just pull up next to a light and race someone. As of right now just bought her about 1 week ago me and a buddy have taken the engine out and are starting to strip her down. We started putting a Invader bodykit and Black Widow Hood on, installed 2 6x8 Alpine Type R Door Speakers, and an Alpine Deck. Fixed a few sensors that were shot and thats about it to the engine, hoping to start doing some modifications to the engine now that I got my job.

definatly 4:10's. trust me you will feel them, they will wake her up.\

4:30 and 4:56 are going to be more trouble than they are worth, plus it will suck down gas like no tomorrow, and kill your top end.

some people run 4:30's on street cars, but there is a reason most people go with 3:90's and 4:10s.

especially if you supercharge or spray it. if you get an adder and have 4:30's and up you may en up breaking something.

lol.....

no biggie.

honestly if you plan to supercharger her and it is a realistic goal for you, you might want to go with 3:73's.

im not sure about the foxbody's, so i could be wrong, but i think a 5.0 geared with 4:10's might cause excess strain on the drivetrain.

maybe somone more familiar with the foxes can chime in and help out

auto or manual? you dont want 4.10's with a 5spd... i can you in touch with many people that agree... i have 3.73s in my car, and they are tolerable.

you going to be running a drag radial/slick or a 17/18" wheel?

4.10s for an aod car, 3.73s for a stick car.

first you dont throw a set of gears on because that ratio sounds good, its gotta work with your hp/tq and which trans you have. and for those who say dont use lower than 3:90, why not .... my friend has a 302 bottom with gt-40 heads that we ported and raised and reangled the ports, intake that he made and more with a custom built trans 5 sp that went from 3:73 to 4:30, helped at the track and is very streetable. I have a 90 lx with a 347 5sp with 4:56 its a little torqy but still streetable , and i have a 93 cobra 331 5sp with 3:73 and it lugged around and needed more gear so i put a set of 4:30 in it and its all better and again streetable, these gears on a stock car probably isnt that good but you need to know your tq curve and the feel on one set of gears to determine if lower will be better, in my case it was.
