You need to let the engine run for ten minutes without touching the throttle after you reconnect the battery. Just some small advice.

Back when I had my 89 5.0, I was told by a auto tech guy I needed to leave the battery cable off for a few hours to clear the computer. Not sure how accurate that is though.

What are you trying to do? If you just want to reset the computer this is what you do. Some people say to unplug the negative side of the battery for half an hour and that will do it. In my many years of working on cars I have always found that the ram in the computer seems to remember things for longer then that on some cars. To reset mine(which I know worked) for idling adjustment purposes, it took 3 hours, so your best bet, if you can spear a night, is to unplug your negative post on your battery, turn on your headlights before you go to sleep, when you wake, that sucker will be stupid for sure. You will have to let it run for only 2 minutes for the computer to adjust itself.

Yes you do need to let it sit running for about 15 minutes after that long night of no juice. This will give the computer enough time to reset itself properly. Look at it this way. Trying starting your computer at home or work and trying listening to music before its even done booting. It doesn't work does it. The same principles apply, sure you can drive it but it might have a few problems still that weren't corrected.
