just bought an 82 5.0

i recently just bought my self an 1982 5.0 mustang and since it is carburated i dont really know what i can do to the engine to make it better. so my question is what can i do to my 82 to make it go FASTER!!!!!!!

3V2000GT 03-27-2006 05:57 PM

ok I have to say this, Nitrous!!! best bang for buck

GREG@94GT 03-27-2006 06:06 PM

eh... **** nitrous...

get exhaust...

get a new intake manifold and go dual cabs or something...

THING TO KNOW...
you have a pre EFI mustang so mods are cheaper

if i were you i strip the block... bore it over.... and go from there...

1982 mustang 5.0 03-27-2006 06:07 PM

how much would the bore $$$$$

depends on where ya go... a few hundred...

the most expensive part is internals and cams...

but its alot of fun building an engine and ya learn alot... if yer dad or other family member is into ol muscle cars i'm sure they could help

1982 mustang 5.0 03-27-2006 06:13 PM

this car is my daily driver so i dont really want to buy a dual carb

advice...

i would get a better daily driver... its kinda pointless doing little mods on these... if in the future ya really wanted to make that thing scream in the future ya'd have to redo mods...

get exhaust.... make it sound nice... and if you can find a nice edelbrock carb for a low price get one of those...

1982 mustang 5.0 03-27-2006 06:23 PM

well my plan is to at least make it run 13s

well ya wanna save on gas i presume...

exhaust... (long tubes, h pipe and flowmasters or something along them lines)
carb (dont go over board)
good wheel/ tire combo
gears (can also eat up gas)
lose a little dead weight...

i hope i helped...

if i were you and i had that car i would make it a drag strip car... i would find a better daily driver... something a little newer or nicer... whether its another mustang or a beater...

money is a big factor though...
depending on where you are from ya might have outrageous insurence costs (like NJ:wallbash: )

i cant really see ya makin 13's w/ that and still having a daily driver....

I repeat do not bore anyting unless you are gonna redo everyting + depending on the miles you would have to bore the cylinder walls out and on the 302's you then encounter thinning the walls a bit. If you want to make your 5.0 faster you must start with getting those anemic heads replaced and going a full header back exhaust. Like greg said you could change your carb, but you dont want to over do it. I can see you running 13's with a street car no problem.

get 3.73's and reworked heads if you do not you will be dissapointed.

1982 mustang 5.0 03-28-2006 02:30 PM

how much would reworking the heads run me

95bstallion 03-28-2006 06:54 PM

Well to buy a set of gt 40 heads with intake would probaly used be in the couple hundred range.

more like over a grand... idk though... do some research

jeredan2003 04-02-2006 07:35 PM

definately dont do a power adder. I would go with some induction mods like heads, intake manifold, and a nice carb with a full exhaust.

GREG@94GT 04-02-2006 07:59 PM

Well... ya could cut a hole in yer hood... and have one of those HUGE BLOWERS stick out...

those are awesome... a supercharged carb'd mustang...

alot of work though...

9COILEDSERPENT6 04-02-2006 09:09 PM

A good cam, Do some research but i think you could swap a set of heads from a 69-70 302 and get some compression, thats where the power is. I think 351w heads would even make the swap. If this isnt practical rework the heads, get an intake, cam, carb that will work good together. Mess with the timing you might find some horses in there, longtubes. Your lucky however parts are plentiful and cheap making this project that much easier. Hope I helped

I know a higher compression is better, but not in his case. Hes gonna have to run premium in it being n/a. They make plenty of decent head and intake combos.
