It's easier than you think. Put a full tank in it, make sure the battery is charged well, and the engine is cold as hell. Apply current so that the posts won't turn backwards and the needles (except for the speedo and rpm) are fairly easy to place.
Next use the procedure to display the diags on the trip meter and with the car running you can place the RPM needle correctly. 1 Needle width won't matter there.
for the speedo... that's a little harder but I used a set of needle nose pliers to hold the center post advanced from where it rested about 20deg clockwise. Then it was off by about 3mph which didn't matter to me.
