The rear O2s can be turned off in a tune, or the computer can be given a false code with MIL eliminators. They exist to let the computer know that the catalytic convertors are doing their job. The O2 reading should decrease going across the convertors.
The front O2s remain in place. They provide the feedback to the computer to know how to trim fuel addition based on how close the A/F ratio is to the stoichiometric ratio (14.6:1) during part throttle conditions.
