This probably won't help but, I had the same problem with my 88 GMC truck when I gassed it. Turned out to be my starter cable was loose and arching. Just in case you may want to check that connection. It was arcing and I would lose power and popping and, it really sounded crazy. new cable and tighten up, ran good as new. FYI..
