I'd use a DSS long block, you can go back with 281cid or even a stroker up to 306cid. There are other companies that offer crate motors as well. I'm thinking of a 306 longblock for my 1999(wife's car) it has 65000 miles on it and she wants more power, so it's upgrade to a new 06 GT or put about 4500 into a new motor and turn about 400hp. 6500 is too many miles to START adding power. You may also do a shortblock repair and reuse your old heads if $ is the big question. But do it right! the best you can afford! Hell if you can find a low mile 4v or get Ford Racing's Mach1 longblock!
